I don't want anything in return from you, Rincewind.
[ Except to be in his city. Where he can watch you and make sure you're not causing trouble. ]
I was envious of you, you know. I was envious of you and your relationship with Doctor Chilton and later on Jorah Mormont. I am a man who is capable of advancing his own career quite quickly, but I've never been a man who is capable of friendship. Not for lack of wanting it, mind. I saw how effortlessly these men I admired accepted you, and it made me resent you because I knew neither of them would ever accept me for anything more than what I could do for them -- politically or monetarily.
So the thought that entered my mind was 'how can I control this threat to the things I want?' And that is what led us down this path. It doesn't excuse it. I do apologize for it, but this is my attempt to at least offer a truce.
Was she close to her father, then? Because, if so, I certainly understand why you might not be her favorite person. But if not, you've simply cleared her path to power.
Of that, I am uncertain. I do not know how Aerys Targaryen treated his children. But at the time, she was a babe and likely does not recall either. Her father was a mad man who would have leveled the entire city and killed many more. Perhaps one of the worst kings we've had. But she will always house a loyalty toward her bloodline that goes beyond reason.
Her brother is also here now. He is the sort you could potentially see in your hospital.
[ Phew. The gravity of this situation is lifted off of his shoulders. He doesn't have to be the one to bring Jaime before Daenerys. He has been let off the hook. And it's much better to proceed in a voluntary manner than to be forced to give up a man who had threatened him with always paying his debts.
But Petyr should be there, if he can. He should see what happens for himself, if he can. ]
Ser Jorah does possess such a talent, yes. And Ser Jaime had expressed interest in meeting him.
[ Probably not being dragged off by him, though... ]
I can talk to him. I can see what his reaction will be -- if he is willing to come before you peacefully or if he will put up a fight. And then you will know where he stands -- if Ser Jorah is needed to retrieve this Lannister. But I do hope this all will come to a peaceful conclusion.
I do appreciate your kindly offer. And should there ever come a time when I have need of it, I will certainly call on your aid. Is this all you wished to discuss, Your Grace?
Her brother? I take it he is the one quite different from her. [Baelish had discussed the recent Targaryen generation, if briefly, and Chilton strove to recall the details.] You are keeping an eye on that one? From the context alone, he sounds menacing.
[ The mad one. It's okay to say it. Hell, Baelish will do it for you, Chilton. ]
Ah yes. Viserys Targaryen takes after his father quite a bit. But he can be controlled and appeased by flattery. I'm certain you know the type. Quick to ire but a few well-placed compliments and they are quite ready to do as you wish.
One must always hope for peace. [ So you do that. ] And if Jaime Lannister were to come to me in the mind to humour the Targaryen orphan girl in mere obligation to peace, we may never have it.
[ Her tone is flat, mildly exasperated, but there is at least some grim satisfaction gained in watching someone turn her command into his own idea and present it back to her, if with softer language. Perhaps this is the difference between America and Westeros.
There is no room in her graciousness to thank him for it. ]
I said I would have him before me, at a time and place of my choosing. If you believe yourself able to accomplish this task, then I leave it in your hands, Ambassador. If the Kingslayer resists, then send for Ser Jorah.
I think I was on sleeping pills when I wrote the last tag to you. IDK WHAT IT MEANS.
Well, I had intended to put a few trustworthy natives into place. But after a correspondence with a man named Shade, I believe he would be more than capable. Are you familiar with him?
[ He shakes his head and rises to his feet to see her out. ]
Only that you be careful, sweetling. When it comes to those of us from Westeros, there are some dangerous sorts. As more and more of us keep porting in, I fear you may start to be swept up in personal family wars and politics.
I believe in time he will. In this case, a well-placed compliment showed him I was someone he could trust. But should he prove to be a piece that cannot be used, I trust you will take him off of my hands? No doubt he will showcase his madness to the world well before then. You'll have more than enough proof that he belongs within your containment center.
[Chilton wasn't usually one to take being a clean up man easily... But Baelish controlled the purse-strings, and they had that weekend in Maine that really stripped raw their mutual ambitions.
We are in the construction process. So it's not ready yet, but it should be sometime in March if the weather permits. If not then, then at the beginning of April for certain. I contemplated building onto the existing library, but I believe it's far better to create something entirely new. Something new tends to garner more interest than something renovated.
It would not be without benefit to you, naturally. Perhaps his mind would be unique enough for you to understand. Or if nothing else, it will help you test out the kinks in your containment center.
But while we're talking, there is another matter I would like to discuss with you of less significance.
