Keeping it together had been something of a trial the past twenty-four hours, when Chilton began to accept that Raina's absence was more than brief. He had grown accustomed to depending upon her for solace and support, and now he had no defense -- emotional or otherwise. In Baltimore, Chilton had nothing like what Raina offered him; he trembled to think that he might return to such a state of mind.
